Informative Conference on ‘Diabetic Foot’ on the island of La Palma
(Canarias, España)

Last December 17, an Informative Conference on Diabetic Foot, aimed at healthcare professionals, was held at the La Palma General Hospital in the Canary Islands and was organized by Professor Dr Manuel Maynar, Head of the HOSPITEN Endoluminal/Endovascular Service and professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in collaboration with the Canary Health Service, Health Zone Management, West Zone

Diabetic Foot is of particular importance in the Canary Islands as the number of cases of Diabetes in the islands is double that in the rest of Spain.

At the conference, the aim was to inform healthcare professionals, especially those in primary care, of the therapeutic alternatives and possibilities to prevent the amputation of legs, which is carried out in approximately one of every five cases.

As Diabetic Foot is a disease in which various factors play a part, both vascular and neurological, there are a variety of possible treatments which, with correct diagnosis and indications, may prevent amputation. Emphasis was also placed on the multidisciplinary focus, as well as the systematic monitoring of patients.
