Informative Conference on ‘Diabetic Foot’ on the island of La Palma (Canarias, España)
Last December 17, an Informative Conference on Diabetic Foot, aimed at healthcare professionals, was held at the La Palma General Hospital in the Canary Islands and was organized by Professor Dr Manuel Maynar, Head of the HOSPITEN Endoluminal/Endovascular Service and professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in collaboration with the Canary Health Service, Health Zone Management, West Zone
Diabetic Foot is of particular importance in the Canary Islands as the number of cases of Diabetes in the islands is double that in the rest of Spain.
At the conference, the aim was to inform healthcare professionals, especially those in primary care, of the therapeutic alternatives and possibilities to prevent the amputation of legs, which is carried out in approximately one of every five cases.
Dr Javier Aragon, Head of the Surgery and Diabetic Foot Unit at the La Paloma Hospital in Gran Canaria, President of the Diabetic Foot Interdisciplinary Study Group and one of the greatest national experts on the subject, was invited to speak on the importance of correct diagnosis in a disease where there are many influencing factors when diagnosing and determining the best treatment. As Diabetic Foot is a disease in which various factors play a part, both vascular and neurological, there are a variety of possible treatments which, with correct diagnosis and indications, may prevent amputation. Emphasis was also placed on the multidisciplinary focus, as well as the systematic monitoring of patients.
Dr Tobias Zander, of the HOSPITEN Endoluminal/Endovascular Service, spoke about the minimally invasive (endovascular) options in the treatment of Diabetic Foot, and about Ozonetherapy, a beneficial complement for the healing of ulcers on the foot.
Professor Dr Manuel Maynar spoke about the importance of training, up-dating and information for both specialist and general physicians and for patients, as well as the application of new communication technology to improve training and, thus, optimize treatment for the patient.
