In Spain more than three thousand cases of skin cancer are registered every year.
More than 60% of the melanomas are produced due to an exceso of exposition to the sun.
The last data of morbidity of the National Institute of Spanish Statistics indicate that the melanoma, experts consider it the most dangerous type of skin cancer, took away the life of 840 Spaniards in the year 2005. This number will continue to rise if the population does not take conscience that they must protect themselves from the solar rays when exposing to the sun for long and continued periods of time, assures doctor Rafael Sanchez Camacho, coordinator of the Dermatology Work Group of the Spanish Society of General Medicine (SSGM). As well warns, that the data facilitated by the Spanish Association Against Cancer, says that between 60% and 90% of the cases of melanoma are due to an excess exposition to the sun.
Likewise, this association points out that in Spain, 3.205 new cases of skin cancer are registered every year, data that the SSGM has decided to remind the population for the month of August.
Dr. Sanchez Camacho points the BASOCELULAR carcinoma and the espinocelular carcinoma, as the other two entities of skin cancer, in which exposition to the sun is the principal risk factor. The bascocelular carcinoma is the most frequent malign coetaneous tumour and it is known for being very heterogenic from the clinic point of view, what in occasions, can make difficult its diagnostic, explains the general doctor.
Adds that the basocelular carcinoma tends to be localized in the face, especially around the nose, in the form of a small and hard unsmooth scar, with small veins in the surface, which doest hurt, but can bleed spontaneously. It is considered by the experts and the most benign skin cancer, as it dos not metastasize, as the carcinoma espinocelular and the melanoma.
On the other hand, the espinoceluluar carcinoma is presented habitually in lesions in the form of a bump or coetaneous horn, of reddish colour, hard consistence and more rapid growth, and with a light inflammation around it. This type of skin cancer tends to be localized in the back of the hand, in the inferior lip, in the chest, in the ears, in the forehead and in the scalp of patients with alopecia, continues to say the doctor.
Finally, Sanchez Camacho, sustains that the melanoma is manifested by a change of size, shape or colour of a lunar, due to lunars which bleed or ooze another liquid, as well as lunars which itch, are hard, lumpy, swollen or more sensible than the rest of the skin when palpated. For this reason, it is recommended to consult a doctor or dermatologist when strange coetaneous changes are observed, “as the precocious diagnostic contributes to a total cure”.
